Wiffleball weekend raises funds for veterans

Wiffleball and veterans? A kids’ backyard game raising money for war veterans seems somehow perfect and it has evolved into quite a pairing.
The Lake Orion Wiffleball Association has grown from a small group of high school friends enjoying a backyard game of wiffleball, a baseball-similar activity that uses a plastic ball and plastic bat.
After starting fundraising efforts in 2010, the L.O.W.A. has raised and donated more than $50,000 to support veterans and military members. Last year, the L.O.W.A. donated $20,500 between the Orion Veterans Memorial, Wins for Warriors, and the benefit Brady’s Brigade.
The organization has set a goal to donate and build a small wiffleball field in an Orion Township park named Veterans Field and hope it will allow future generations to enjoy wiffleball and honor veterans.
The Draft Night Charity Dinner Friday has a silent auction, awards such as Miss Wiffleball and Best Mustache and a draft of teams for the tournament. There are eight teams of four players each.
To purchase tickets or to donate, go to www.lakeorionwiffleball.com.  100% of the proceeds go to the causes.
