An Orion Twp. teenager has died a week after being shot in the head while at a friend’s home in Pontiac.
Solomon Bonner, an eighth-grader at Waldon Middle School student, died this past weekend, a week after being shot, according to his father’s Facebook post.
Bonner, 15, was on the track team at Waldon and was the team’s fastest sprinter, said a source within the school who requested anonymity.
Bonner was planning on attending Orchard Lake St. Marys High School in the fall.
Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputies and the Waterford Regional Fire Dept. responded to a shooting call at 11:14 p.m. March 18 in the 100 block of Wall Street, according to a sheriff’s report.
The 911 caller reported the shooting, and said there was “a group of juveniles gathering in front of his residence in a panic,” according to the report.
Deputies arrived at the home and were led to a second-story bedroom where they found the victim with the gunshot wound and “labored breathing.”
Paramedics from Star EMS transported Bonner to McLaren Hospital Oakland for treatment.
Detectives and the OSCO Forensic Science Lab arrived at the home to assist with the investigation.
Three teens who were at the home at the time of the shooting, including the one who called 911, were taken to the sheriff’s department substation in Pontiac to speak with detectives.
Deputies called the victim’s family, and the teen was later transferred to Children’s Hospital in Detroit.
While speaking with the three teen witnesses, detectives identified one as the shooter.
The weapon, a .32 caliber handgun, was found in the backyard of a neighboring home.
Police took the suspect, 14, to the Oakland County Children’s Village, while the remaining witnesses were released to their parents.
Bonner and the suspect are best friends and detectives are trying to determine if this was an accidental discharge of a weapon incident, according to the report.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Dept. is investigating the shooting.
