LO Wrestlers put on a winning show for alums

In front of a good alumni night turnout, the Lake Orion High School wrestling team won a 28-27 decision from Waterford Kettering in dramatic fashion.
Jake Varilek capped a 24-point comeback for the Dragons with his win at 135 pounds. The team is now 16-1 on the year.
Before Varilek’s major decision win (worth four points), Billy Bissett got a pin at 130 pounds, and Jeremy Peshl won an overtime decision at 125 pounds.
The rally was started after a scheduled intermission with Shane Tobin getting a pin at heavyweight.
‘This was a huge win against a very, very good wrestling team,? coach Doug Kline said.
Kline’s team used the five minute intermission halfway through the match to their advantage.
The intermission was used to honor former wrestling coach Tim Fagan and to recognize the alums in attendance (for more on this, see page 29).
‘We came out strong after the break,? Kline said. ‘That was the best thing that could have happened to us.?
The Dragons won seven of the final eight matches to rally, after falling in all of the first six.
‘I thought we came out a bit flat in the beginning,? Kline said.
In spite of the victory, Kline hopes his wrestlers learned a valuable lesson against the feisty Kettering group.
‘We’re nowhere near where we need to be,? he said. ‘This is going to be a good wake-up call.?
The Dragons have already lost two starters for the year, and another for a month.
Kline said only hard work will help his team overcome the injuries.
Earlier in the week, the LO wrestlers bested both Troy schools in convincing fashion on Jan. 4.
In a 55-22 win over Troy, the Dragons took first place honors in 10 of the 14 weight classes.
Then they bettered that victory by winning 12 of 14 weight classes in a 61-7 rout of Troy Athens.
The squad next to the mats on Jan. 12, in a quad-meet at Allen Park; and travels to East Detroit for a tournament on Jan 14.
‘We have a little semi-break from the league now,? Kline said.
