Lake Orion’s varsity softball team has had a storied season this year.
Junior Shelby Mishiak has anchored the team in hitting while sophomore Kasidy Carson and senior Sierra Gonzales have given the team solid pitching and hitting.
Gonzales got the win for the first game of last Tuesday’s doubleheader against Rochester, 11-1.
Freshman Tessa Nuss, Mishiak and Carson provided much of the punch.
The Dragons crushed the Falcons, 18-3, in game two with Alaina Basso going four for five with four RBI.
Next up was Davison two days later in a doubleheader winning.
The Dragons won 8-0 in game one with Gonzales improving her record to 16-2.
Mishiak was two for four with a home run while senior Mackenzie Case had a triple and two RBI.
The Dragons won game two 7-4 scoring six runs in the fifth inning to take the lead. Junior pitcher Alexis Aguilar got the win to improve her record to 10-1
Coach Joe Woitrya and the 18 girls traveled to Brandon on Wednesday and on Thursday they resumed an important game against Clarkston at home. The game had been postponed. They’ll be picking up in the top of the fifth inning. Lake Orion is down 10-7.
Woitrya said that Clarkston is a solid team but he has confidence his girls will rally back.
“We have one of the loudest benches and their support is that of a collegiate level bench,” he said. “We have to beat Clarkston and that leaves Oxford, Mott, and Adams on the other side of the bracket.”
The Dragons are currently 12-0 in the league and if they win against the Wolves they will cement their status as league champs. If they lose, they have another opportunity to be champions during a make-up game next Wednesday against Troy which Lake Orion was leading 3-0 in the bottom of the first when the game was postponed.
“If we play the way we can play we should have a very good chance in districts,” Woitrya said. “I feel pretty good about our chances but it’s softball. One mistake, if you let that snowball into multiple mistakes, then you’re in trouble.”
