A 43-year-old Troy man died Aug. 4 as a result of injuries he sustained when a golf cart flipped over and landed on him at Copper Hills Golf Course (2125 Lakeville Rd.) in Addison Township.
Eric Clement Ostdiek was operating a 2007 Club Car golf cart on the course when he drove through the tee box and started down a hill to retrieve an errant ball.
He observed a steep drop-off ahead and attempted to turn the wheel sharply, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department Crash Reconstruction Unit.
The cart rolled over and landed on top of Ostdiek, leaving him severely injured. Addison paramedics transported him to Crittenton Hospital in Rochester Hills.
Ostdiek, who was a social worker and boys golf coach for Southfield Public Schools, was pronounced dead while enroute to the hospital.
The passenger in the cart, a 41-year-old Macomb Township resident, was also injured and transported to Crittenton, where he was treated and released.
It’s unknown at this time if alcohol use was a factor in this crash, which remains under investigation.
This was the second golf cart crash at Copper Hills this summer.
On June 22, a cart crash sent a 17-year-old Rochester Hills resident to the hospital. He was a passenger when the driver, a 16-year-old Orchard Lake resident, failed to negotiate a curve in the cart path between the fifth and sixth holes and lost control of the vehicle.
The cart travelled into the woods where the 17-year-old was ejected and sustained a head injury.
