Reading plus teamwork equalled victory for the Story Stars.
This team from Oxford Elementary School won the ‘Battle of the Books? competition held April 9 at the high school Fine Arts Center.
Winners included Makenzie Brown, Ellie Dimalanta, Emma Morris, Alexis Bean, Maddy Lovins and Alexa Tarsney. Team adviser was Kristin Morris.
Sponsored by the Oxford Public Library and Oxford Community Schools, the competition consisted of asking teams of students 15 questions about five specific books they were required to read.
The Story Stars amassed a total of 67 points out of a possible 75. They edged out the second place team by four points.
Kim Burean, head of youth services at the Oxford library, indicated the team’s adviser told her the girls ‘really enjoyed having their own book club, like their moms do.?
‘They’re planning to continue doing that (in the form of) a summer book club,? she said. ‘I thought that was kind of a neat result of the program.?
A total of 20 teams consisting of more than 100 students registered for this year’s reading competition. Every contestant was a fourth-grader who attends Oxford, Leonard, Lakeville and Clear Lake elementary schools.
